Ready to take your skills as an arbitrator to the next level? Join Ciarb for our new series: The Learning Lab: Arbitrator Skills Development. This six-part series of workshops has been designed to develop your arbitration management skills and equip you with the knowledge and confidence required to robustly handle every stage of arbitral proceedings.
In every workshop in the Learning Lab series, you'll gain insights from leading professionals before applying your new knowledge and developing your practical skills in a small group session led by an experienced dispute resolution expert. This series is suitable for both seasoned arbitrators and arbitration practitioners who plan to start sitting as arbitrators in the future.
This series will be hosted as six separate workshops on six consecutive Wednesdays from 15 May to 19 June, between 13:00-14:30 BST (GMT+1). The workshop panel discussions (approximately 40 minutes) will be recorded and made available to registrants. The group work in breakout rooms (approximately 45 minutes) will not be recorded. 29 May- Show and Tell: Making Robust Disclosures and Handling Arbitrator Interviews
What should an arbitrator disclose to parties, and when may arbitrator interviews be inappropriate? We will consider what an arbitrator should and should not share with parties, equipping you with the knowledge required to make robust disclosures to parties and recognise when to agree to be interviewed before appointment, and when it may not be appropriate.

Amanda J. Lee FCIArb is a Consultant at Costigan King and sits as arbitrator in international and domestic arbitration proceedings. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Law, UK. Amanda is a member of ArbitralWomen’s Advisory Council, the Advisory Board of INIAC, and the Peer Review Board of the American Review of International Arbitration, amongst other appointments. She is the founder of Careers in Arbitration and ARBalance.
Mercy McBrayer FCIArb is Ciarb’s Head of Arbitration Professional Practice. Mercy is a United States qualified attorney (Texas) and certified mediator with experience as party counsel in commercial business litigation and arbitration. She is an assistant editor of the Ciarb Journal, a Teaching Fellow in international arbitration at Queen Mary University of London, a speaker and lecturer on issues of international arbitration and ADR, and moot coach.
International chartered arbitrator and accredited fellow mediator with significant experience in commercial disputes in both the Civil and Common Law systems. Formerly a lawyer at a top-tier New York law firm, went on to join a prominent American firm in 2008 to expand Middle East operations. Currently, serves as a partner at Chrysalis LLP, a Dubai-based arbitration firm established in 2016. Having served as arbitrator on numerous cases under a variety of rules, specializes in disputes pertaining to construction, infrastructure, international trade, shareholder and joint venture matters, and real estate.
Aarta is an elected officer of the Ciarb's Dubai Committee, the Vice-Chair of the International Projects Committee of the International Bar Association ((BA) and serves as an officer and Council Member on the IBA's Diversity and Inclusion Council.
Cecilia is a lawyer with more than 25 years of experience specialized in mediation and judicial proceedings related to alternative dispute resolution. She co-leads the Arbitration practice at Galicia Abodagos
She joined Galicia as a partner in 2018, where she has since focused her practice on complex domestic and international commercial disputes. Acting as arbitrator, counsel, mediator and expert in Mexican law, she has developed extensive experience, particularly in cases related to energy, infrastructure, construction, and commercial mediations.
Among her clients are national and foreign companies that have entered into agreements related to energy or construction and infrastructure matters. Her recent cases involve complex disputes arising from PPA and public/ private work agreements. She has participated in matters related to distribution agreements, technology transfer and international sales.
Cecilia is recognized for her expertise and record of accomplishment in complex, arbitration-related judicial proceedings before Mexican courts, such as arbritral annulation and enforcement of awards, interim measures, amongst others. In close collaboration with other practice areas of the Firm, she advises clients in Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) matters, specifically by analyzing investment protection provisions in Investment Treaties to which Mexico is party.
She teaches arbitration and mediation in undergraduate and graduate courses at UNAM, ITAM and CIDE.
Currently, Cecilia is president of the Mexican Institute of Mediation (IMM). She is on Mexico’s list of conciliators in ICSID proceedings and is a member of ICC´s International Arbitration Court. Recently, she was appointed as co-chair of the ICC Advanced Arbitration Academy for Latin America, whose purpose is to train and guide 40 selected candidates as arbitrators, with a particular focus on ICC Arbitration Rules. In addition, as of November 2022, she is a member of the Steering Committee of the Latin America Working Group created by the IBA Arbitration Committee. Previously, she served as president of the Mexican Arbitration Institute (IMA), Secretary General and Counsel of the Mexican Arbitration Center (CAM), vice-president of Mexico´s ICC Arbitration Commission, and consultant for Mexico´s Mediation Project sponsored by the American Bar Association and USAID.
Cecilia is recognised as an expert by renowned international publication Chambers and Partners in the Dispute Resolution: Arbitration practice. Since 2021, she is part of Chambers and Partners' Most in Demand Arbitrators list. In addition, The Legal 500, Leaders League and Latin Lawyer recognize her as a leader in the national and international legal market for her experience and client satisfaction.

Philip is a Barrister & Chartered Arbitrator with experience in dozens of commercial arbitrations arising in and out of Sub-Saharan Africa in energy, construction, mergers & acquisitions, mining, security contracts, banking, carriage of goods, telecommunications, shareholder disputes including publicly procured contracts under institutional rules of the LCIA, UNCITRAL, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, AAA, ICC and Ad Hoc and on ICSID President’s Panel until 2023, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators’ president’s panel, FIDIC DAABs and CIArb accreditor mediator. Contributor to World Arbitration Reporter (Uganda) and ICCA Handbook (Uganda). Designated to UNCITRAL Working Groups II and III as a state delegate since 2017 and occasional appointing authority under UNCITRAL rules.
Bernard Eder is an international arbitrator based at 24 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London. He previously practised as a barrister (KC 1990) specialising in commercial litigation and international arbitration. In 2011, he was appointed a Judge of the High Court of England and Wales. He resigned from the Bench in April 2015. During that time, he sat mainly in the Commercial Court in London. Since 2015, he has been an International Judge at the Singapore International Commercial Court (part-time). He was formerly Senior Editor of Scrutton on Charterparties and Chair of ARIAS(UK). Over the years, he has been appointed as arbitrator in over 400 international arbitrations. He is ranked Band 1 (International Arbitrators, UK) in both Chambers and Legal 500; and was awarded Lawyer of the Year (United Kingdom) – International Arbitration (Lawyer Monthly Legal Awards 2022). Napoleão Casado Filho is the current Chair of the Brazilian Branch the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He holds a PhD degree in International Law at Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC/SP) and was a Post-doctoral Researcher at Université Paris II – Pantheon-Sorbonne. He is a Legal Board Member of the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (FIESP). Napoleão has been coaching Vis Moot teams from PUC/SP and UNIPE since 2007. He is a founding partner of Clasen, Caribé & Casado Filho, a boutique arbitration law firm in São Paulo, Brazil. Napoleão works as an arbitrator at the main Arbitration Centers in Brazil, handling disputes involving M&A, Construction, and Energy.
Shan Greer is an international arbitrator and mediator associated with Arbitra International in London and Chief Executive Officer of the British Virgin Islands International Arbitration Centre. She has over twenty years of experience advising clients on a wide variety of commercial transactions and disputes with specific expertise in construction law. Known for a practical and commercially sensitive approach, Shan Greer has successfully handled a wide variety of transactions and disputes across multiple jurisdictions in the Caribbean, Europe and North America. She qualified as a barrister and solicitor in England and has a Master from Kings College London in Construction Law and Dispute Resolution. She is admitted to practice in Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and Belize.
Shan Greer regularly acts as an arbitrator, adjudicator and mediator in ad hoc, institutional, international and domestic arbitrations in both civil and common law jurisdictions. She is currently named to the roster of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution, British Virgin Islands International Arbitration Centre, Dispute Resolution Centre in Trinidad and Tobago, Dispute Resolution Association in St. Lucia and the Jamaica International Arbitration Centre. Saint Lucia nominated Shan Greer for inclusion in the CARICOM Secretariats List of Arbitrators and Conciliators established under the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas. Recently, she was appointed by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in an international oil and gas dispute.
Shan Greer is passionate about education. She not only co-founded the Caribbean ADR Initiative, a non-profit promoting the use of ADR in the Caribbean, but is a past Chair and current Education Director for the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Caribbean Branch. Both these roles have afforded her the opportunity to share her expertise and experience with other Caribbean professionals with the view to building capacity in the region.
Ms Delphine Ho is a full-time independent arbitrator and mediator, with 20 years of experience as counsel, in the Singapore courts and in an arbitral institution. She has been appointed in arbitrations as president, co-arbitrator and sole arbitrator under various arbitral rules, including the rules of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules.
Delphine’s disputes expertise spans various sectors and industries, including construction and infrastructure, shareholder and joint venture, energy, commodities, transportation, technology and general commercial matters.
Prior to joining The Arbitration Chambers, Delphine was the Registrar of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre from 2016 to 2021. As Registrar, she oversaw the administration of thousands of arbitration cases filed with the SIAC and conducted under the SIAC Arbitration Rules (multiple editions), the UNCITRAL Rules and other institutional rules.
Delphine started practice in one of the largest legal firms in Singapore, with a practice focused on complex litigation and arbitration. She entered the Singapore judicial service in 2013, serving concurrently as an Assistant Registrar in the Supreme Court and District Judge of the State Courts.
The Rt. Hon. Dame Elizabeth Gloster DBE, PC, One Essex Court (and former English Court of Appeal Judge and current Judge of the Abu Dhabi Global Market Courts and Justice of the Court of Appeal of Bermuda)
Dame Elizabeth Gloster practised as a commercial and Chancery QC at One Essex Court from 1991 until 2004, before accepting an appointment as a High Court judge, becoming the first woman to be appointed a judge of the Commercial Court. She was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2013 and became Vice-President of the Civil Division of that Court in 2016. Since retiring from the Court of Appeal in 2018, Liz has returned to One Essex Court to practise as a full-time international commercial arbitrator.
She has been appointed both as chair and co-arbitrator in a large number and wide range of international arbitrations including insurance/reinsurance, shipping, banking, gas and oil, electricity pricing, construction, joint venture and investment disputes. Liz is one of 25 persons listed as willing and able to serve as a member of an arbitration panel under the Agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom relating to the UK’s Withdrawal from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community. In November 2020 she produced her independent investigation's report into the Financial Conduct Authority's regulation of London Capital & Finance plc. In July 2021 she was appointed to the ICC International Court of Arbitration as an alternate member for the UK. Most recently, with effect from 1 September 2023, Liz was appointed by the Master of the Rolls, on the advice of an independent selection panel, to serve as a Deputy Chair of the Takeover Appeal Board. She was awarded Senior Arbitrator of the Year at the Legal 500 Bar Awards 2023.
Ben Giaretta is the Head of Dispute Resolution at Fox Williams LLP. He is a Chartered Arbitrator, a Fellow of the Ciarb and the Deputy Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Ciarb. He has broad experience in international arbitration across many sectors including M&A, transport, energy, construction and infrastructure. As well as representing clients, he has also often been appointed as arbitrator. Currently based in London, he has also spent seven years living and working in Singapore.
Karl Hennessee FRAeS, is SVP Litigation, Investigations & Regulatory Affairs at Airbus, where he leads the Group’s global activities in these areas. Separately, he lectures at various Universities and occasionally sits as arbitrator and serves on the board of directors of companies and non-profits. He previously served as Chairman of the Governing Body of the ICC Court of International Arbitration and is now a member of the HKIAC Council as well as its Appointments and Rules Committees. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the International Council of Commercial Arbitration, the IBA Mediation Committee, the Advisory Council for the School of International Arbitration at Queen Mary University of London and on the Board of the Toulouse Capitole Law School.
Sapna Jhangiani KC has over two decades’ experience in appearing before courts and tribunals, and sitting as a neutral, in complex commercial disputes seated all over the world. She has practised in London, New York, Dubai and Singapore and is dual-qualified as an English barrister, and an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore. She holds an undergraduate degree from Oxford University, and a diploma in international commercial arbitration from Queen Mary University, London, in which she graduated with distinction.
Sapna is consistently ranked in the leading legal directories, and was recognised by Asian Legal Business as one of Asia’s top 15 female lawyers. She was also included in the inaugural list of "Asia's top 100 Lawyers" published by the Asia Law Business Journal. Sapna is currently International Legal Counsel at the Attorney-General’s Chambers, Singapore, during which period she maintains a practice as arbitrator and mediator. She is a Fellow and Chartered Arbitrator of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and is Chair of the Singapore branch of the Institute.
Sara K. Aranjo leads Morgan Lewis’s international arbitration and disputes practice across the Middle East and Africa. She advises and represents the interests of governments, semi-governments, and corporations in proceedings arising out of inbound and outbound investments in the Middle East and Africa across a range of sectors, including energy, real estate, hospitality, construction, banking and finance, distribution, and technology, media, and telecommunications. In addition to her work as counsel, Sara sits as an arbitrator and mediator.
Sara has been involved in more than 100 proceedings in the Arabic, French, and English languages across jurisdictions in Algeria, Bahrain, Cameroon, Chad, Egypt, Ghana, Iraq, Ivory Coast, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen, in addition to France, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the United States, Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea.
Sara has been recognized as one of the 45 top leading international arbitration practitioners under 45 by the Global Arbitration Review in 2023 and ranked as a Global Elite Thought Leader in international arbitration by Who’s Who Legal.
Beyond her law practice, Sara regularly publishes articles and speaks about international arbitration and dispute resolution. As a faculty member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb) Diploma in International Arbitration, she lectures on the burden and standard of proof in international arbitration. Sara also serves as an adjunct professor of law at the Université Paris II – Panthéon-Assas, where she lectures on comparative judicial and legal systems, namely civil law, common law, and Islamic law.
Sara serves as a member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris. She is a member of the Court of Arbitration of the Swiss Centre and the inaugural Arbitration Court of the Saudi Centre for Commercial Arbitration. Sara serves as a deputy secretary-general of the International Bar Association (IBA), where she co-chairs the IBA Arab Regional Forum and the in-house counsel group of the IBA Arbitration Committee.
Sara holds an LL.B. in French and Lebanese law from Saint Joseph University, an M.A. in International Business Law from the University of Paris, an M.S. in Strategic Management and Finance from the ESSEC Business School in Paris and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Harvard Law School.

Adedoyin Rhodes-Vivour, Senior Advocate of Nigeria is the Managing Partner of Doyin Rhodes- Vivour & Co. Legal Practitioners, Consultants and Arbitrators, a commercial law firm specializing in Litigation, Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
She holds the LLB [Hons.][1980] and LLM [1986] degrees in Law from the University of Lagos, Nigeria. She holds a Masters of Arts degree [MA] with merit in International Peace and Security from King’s College London, University of London [2002]. In recognition of her leadership qualities, she was nominated by the United States Information Services (USIS) to participate in the ‘Young African Leaders Programme’ in 1990. In 2005 she was awarded the British Government Chevening Scholarship in the area of peaceful settlement of International disputes.
Adedoyin is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) and a Chartered Arbitrator. She is a Centre for Dispute Resolution [CEDR] (UK) Accredited Mediator. She holds a Practice Diploma in International Arbitration Law of the Law Society of England and Wales/International Bar Association. Adedoyin is a member of the International Chamber of Commerce Paris, Court of Arbitration .She is a member of the World Bank Group Sanctions Board. She is a member of the Panel of Arbitrators of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes [ICSID]. She is a member of the ICC Paris, Commission on Arbitration and ADR .
Mrs. Rhodes-Vivour has very significant experience in arbitration proceedings domestically and internationally. Her areas of expertise include oil and gas, construction and infrastructural projects, investment arbitration, maritime, power, banking and finance, franchise and commercial disputes generally. She has acted as counsel in various arbitration proceedings. Her legal practice actively encourages alternative dispute resolution and she has successfully mediated several disputes. She has also acted as consultant to some regulatory bodies for drawing up arbitration/ADR industry specific schemes.
In recognition of her distinguished service in the Legal and ADR field, she has received various Awards and Recognitions. She is listed in editions of the Global Arbitration Review (GAR) International Who’s Who of Commercial Arbitration and Who’s Who Legal and recognized as one of the world’s leading arbitrators. She is described by ‘Who’s Who Legal’ as “a very active and well-regarded lawyer with decades of experience in domestic and international arbitration”. Nhu-Hoang Tran Thang is an international arbitration lawyer and the founding partner of Geneva based law firm Astute Dispute Resolution.
Having acted as counsel, arbitrator, or assistant to the arbitral tribunal in over 40 arbitrations, Nhu-Hoang has extensive experience of managing arbitral proceedings conducted under the most frequently encountered rules (ICC, Swiss Rules, ICSID, UNCITRAL, SCC, LCIA, FAI, CRCICA and DIS) in various industries, with a focus on energy, commodity trading and international sales, hospitality, leisure and F&B (Food & Beverage), banking and finance as well as consultancy and other service agreements.
Before setting up Astute Dispute Resolution, Nhu-Hoang practiced international arbitration in some of the most reputable arbitration teams of leading international law firms in Geneva, Paris and London, and as the sole associate to a leading arbitrator and arbitration thought leader, Prof. Pierre Tercier.
Nhu-Hoang holds executive mandates with several leading arbitral associations and institutions, and is equally committed to mentoring arbitration students and younger colleagues.
She is recognized as an “Arbitration Future Leader” and an “Arbitration Thought Leader Under 45” by Who’s Who Legal, and was elected the “Client’s Choice” for Arbitration and ADR in Switzerland by Lexology in 2024.
Nancy M. Thevenin is an international arbitrator and mediator based in New York City. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, an adjunct professor of the International Commercial Arbitration course at St. John's University School of Law, a past chair of the New York State Bar Association’s International Section, and a Member of the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators for the Republic of Haiti.
Ms. Thevenin also advises on arbitrations, mediation strategy, dispute boards, expertise proceedings, ad hoc cases and use of emergency arbitrator procedures. Her experience includes arbitrations under various institutional rules, including the ICC, ICDR, and ICSID and advising on early resolution of matters that would otherwise become formal disputes. Ms. Thevenin’s experience includes handling disputes for multinational companies and governments in the construction and engineering, financial services, commercial real estate and aviation industries, often involving issues concerning mergers and acquisition, sales, distribution, licensing, technology transfer and leasing agreements. Ms. Thevenin works in English, Spanish, French, and Haitian Creole.
A graduate of Cornell University and Tulane Law School, Ms. Thevenin started her practice as an international litigation and arbitration practitioner in Miami, Florida, then served as deputy director of arbitration and ADR for North America for the ICC International Court of Arbitration in New York, and thereafter, she was a special counsel in and global coordinator of Baker & McKenzie’s International Arbitration Practice Group. Ms. Thevenin also served as outside general counsel for USCIB/ICC USA, the U.S. national committee to the ICC, and, among other things, managed its Arbitration Committee.
Maria Claudia Procopiak acts as an arbitrator in a wide variety of international arbitration matters under all major institutional and ad hoc arbitration rules. She was previously Deputy Counsel at the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris and a Senior Associate at Dechert LLP in Paris and London, representing states, state entities and private companies in commercial and investment arbitrations. Can Yeğinsu is a barrister and arbitrator practising from 3 Verulam Buildings in the areas of commercial and investment treaty arbitration, commercial litigation, private and public international law.
Can is the current International Arbitration Junior of the Year for both Chambers & Partners and Legal 500. He is ranked in Band 1 for his practice in international human rights and international arbitration, and has leading rankings in public international law, administrative law and human rights. He has acted in over 40 cases before the European Court of Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
He is Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center and Visiting Professor Koç University Law School, where he teaches investment law and arbitration. He is also Lecturer-in-Law at Columbia Law School where he teaches international law and Partner Fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, University of Cambridge. He is a Member of the IBA’s Investment Treaty Arbitration Subcommittee and a Member of the Executive Council of the American Society of International Law.
Gary Hickinbottom was a London City solicitor for over 20 years, being a partner in Cameron McKenna (now CMS), before he retired to be a full-time judge. During his 20 years as a judge, Gary sat in a wide variety of tribunals and courts, his posts including Circuit Judge, the Designated Civil Judge for Wales, a Judge of the Supreme Court of the Falklands, the Chief Social Security and Child Support Commissioner, the President of the Administrative Appeals Chamber of the Upper Tribunal, the Deputy Senior President of Tribunals, a High Court Judge and a Judge of the Court of Appeal. In 2021, he retired from the Court of Appeal to conduct a Commission of Inquiry into Governance and Corruption in the British Virgin Islands. He is currently the President of Welsh Tribunals, and has recently been appointed to Chair the Post Office Overturned Convictions Independent Pecuniary Assessment Panel. He is the Chair of the Judicial Panel of the Lawn Tennis Association and of British Wrestling, and is a member of several other sports arbitration panels and appeal boards, spending a good deal of his time involved in sports arbitration as well as commercial arbitration. He is a Registered Mediator, a Fellow of CIArb and a former Patron of the Institute in Wales, and a Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Arbitrators.
As a solicitor, he was involved in some of the largest litigation ever to have come before our courts. In his various judicial and tribunal roles, he has been closely involved in case and hearing management, being a supervisory judge in all levels of court including the Court of Appeal, in which he managed both individual and cohorts of cases. He has taken that case management experience into his sport and commercial arbitration practice, and his judicial panel work.
